LiposuctionPeople who want to know about the cosmetic surgery of liposuction in Malaga and the Costa del Sol, can receive basic information on this website of Dr. Ruiz Ruiz, Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon.

What does liposuction or Liposculpture consist of?

Liposuction or liposculpture corrects the accumulation of fat by removing the fat by a suction method from different parts of the body: hips, thighs, knees, ankles, arms, abdomen, face, etc. using a special surgical device.

How is it done?

Liposuction is normally performed under local anesthetic and sedation, but in very extensive cases it would be performed under general anesthetic.

Liposculpture starts through a small incision in the skin, a pointed suction tube is introduced into the deposits of fat and the area from which fat is to be extracted is “swept”. The fat that comes loose is “succioned” through this tube while a vacuum pump or large syringe provides the suction action. Various sites on the skin may need to be punctured in order to treat extensive areas.

Once the operation has been performed, a compression bandage or elastic garment will be used depending on the area treated. It is normal for bruises and inflammation to appear in the tissues of the succioned area.

Liposuction is performed in an operating theatre, in a clinic or hospital in Malaga or la Costa del Sol. If the procedure is not very extensive, in other words, if the amount of fat to be eliminated does not exceed the amount considered extensive by the surgeon in accordance with your health, body size and surgery, it could be performed using local anesthetic and sedation.

In some cases an epidural anesthetic may be used, the same anesthesia used in some births. If your plastic surgeon is planning to perform liposuction of extensive areas or to treat various different areas, a general anesthetic is preferred.

Operation and postoperative care

Liposuction tends to last between 1 and 2 hours, but this is variable (from 30 minutes to various hours) depending on the area and the quantity. After the surgery, a corset, tights or elastic bandage will be worn on the treated area in order to control the swelling and bleeding and to help the skin adapt to the new contours. It is generally necessary to wear this for 2 to 3 weeks, and then only during the day for a further few weeks. The healing is a gradual process and it is advisable to begin walking again as soon as possible but without undertaking any intense activity for 2 to 4 weeks. The stitches will be removed after 5 to 10 days, and the swelling and the bruising will disappear during the first or second month after the liposuction; however, there may be minimal inflammation for 6 months or more.

Liposuction is a very effective technique with which to provide a new body shape with minimal scarring. The results can be permanent, providing you maintain an adequate diet and exercise regularly. If you gain weight you will do so evenly and not just in the localized fat deposits.

The ideal candidates for liposculpture are those who have these peripheral accumulations of fat. Liposuction is NOT an anti-obesity procedure.
